American presidential elections and dirty tricks

 on

“My name is Bryan not Barack Obama, she’s my customer – not Sara Palin”

It is not often that I would post the same image twice in my stories. However , this photo of the homeless man and a women has become part of dirty tricks in American presidential campaign.

Someone has doctored this image to portrait Barack Obama as the shoe shine man and Sara Palin as his customer. This altered image is being circulated via email in USA. The perpetrator of this plagiarism left my copyright notice, which contains the address of this website, thus implying it was my original work. This is quite a low act as it involuntarily involves me and my photographic work in American presidential campaign, which I honestly do not know much about nor do I follow it. I certainly do not have favourite views either for American Democrats or Republicans.

I would like to assure both senator Barack Obama and Alaska’s Governor Sarah Palin that the altered image has not been created, authorised, endorsed or distributed by me.

It is quite shameful someone had to escape to plagiarism and imply my involvement. Yes, I do have a copy of the doctored image but I will not publish it.

I see you’ve threatened, out of all the thousand sites to have this image up since before the election, Patterico. Why that site and why now? Why not go after the really racist sites? The sites that have been trafficing on this image for over a year.

To take on this one site seems to me very suspicious and manipulated.

I think you are getting some very bad advice from some very odd quarters and would be well advised to just walk away from this.

If you’ve got someone else muttering in your ears about what a great case you have you are being manipulated. Don’t be somebody else’s puppet or tool. Hear this now or hear it later.

    Mitchell,

Just curious, but what specific evidence did you find that compelled you to castigate all Conservatives?

Oh, wait, you further explain they’re not REALLY conservatives, just radicals — but somehow the first paragraph is supposed to lose the orignal meaning, right?

The media has empowered conservative, radical, racists? Hmmm. Not certain the significance of that doozy, but I guess if a doctored and photoshoped image is automatically the doings of the entirerty of conservatives in your mind, well, then, it must be true!

  • In all honesty, and as an American, I must say it’s an absolutely shame what our so-called conservatives do. If one feels so compelled as to create the image of Obama shining Plin’s shoes, for God’s sake remove the original photographers name. But of course, our conservatives are, by and by, mentally challenged: either not so bright and or suffering from questionable judgment, if any.

And actually, of course, they’re not even conservative. They’re radicals who hate America’s freedoms and liberties. Indeed, the difference between them and the terrorists is that the former are more powerful and have done this nation great harm.

And, for that matter, I have no idea why the elite media feels any need to empower this radical fringe. Regardless, though, the media are paying with their diminishing, alienated audiences, readers and viewers.

Again, apologies to all, specially Ted.

Do NOT fret; I have received so many compliments to wonderful humor that is displayed in the Obama/Sarah alteration. Your pictures are absolutely wonderful and I would not have ever known of you, Ted, had it not been for the Humorous alteration. It speaks more truth than the deceived care to see.

I just received the email with the man and woman. The man’s head looking like Barrack Obama, and the woman. You know, it truely sickens me to death. I am a 45 year old WHITE WOMAN and i have a great deal of respect for that man. I find this kind of humor to be highly insulting to all black americans in this country. To all white americans in this county who know that discrimination is for the ignorant. How dispicable. I wouldn’t pass that kind of crap on to anyone. SHAME ON THAT PERSON WHO DID THAT…It is not funny in any way !!!! Most people would only dream to have the education that Barrack Obama has.

  • Thank you for bringing this issue forward so that all can see that racism does indeed exist in the U.S.

It occurred to me that this could be a very vile but clever way to make people angry at the Republicans and help defeat McCain. I don’t for a minute believe that the Republicans have a lock on devious activities.

I am independent and I will vote for Cynthia McKinney or I will write in “No One”. Having said that, I DO wear an Obama pin whenever I leave the house because I know the American public just is not ready to think for themselves. Maybe next time.

    Dear Ted,
That photo was so disgusting that I actually looked up the credit for it for the first time in my life. I thought this website would be completely bogus and wouldn’t even exist. It is apparant that cowardice is still alive and well among racists, as only a racist would create such a photo and not take credit for it (and even let someone else take the blame). This is just like the KKK, who had to wear hoods to conceal themselves, because their behavior was so shameful. I’m glad to see that you are not the one who altered the photo or sent it around. Thankfully, we have extremely well educated, thoughtful Americans like Obama running for president.

“…and there he will have his socialized medicine where if he ever contracts a life threatening ailment he doesn’t die while while waiting for his name to come up for treatment as has been the case of so many under the auspices of Governments supporting this type of medical care for their citizens.”

Typical BS from someone who has no clue about our so-called “socialized medicine”. How about looking in your own glass house before you throw stones?

That’s what happens to people without insurance in the US (and good luck getting it if you have a pre-existing condition. Hell, even if you are insured, you still need to worry about your coverage being magically canceled once you get sick enough to need it!)

Yes, there may be waiting periods for non-essential procedures here, but at least Canadians don’t have to choose between paying their mortgage and their medical bills (perhaps one reason there’s no foreclosure crisis in Canada, and no bank failures either!!)

    Ted,
Thanks for publishing the original. I get the impression of a decent homeless man trying to improve his lot by working, and a decent young woman trying to help him while getting a nice shine on her shoes. I came to your site from a political blog, and it is refreshing to see this view of humanity. Thank you, and may the plagiarist one day grow up and apologize for vandalizing your work.

  • I see that the people who think things like overt racism are out in force to defend the plagiarism, all the while spouting their memes and hate to try and convince everyone – including themselves – they they’re right. That and the vultures, looking for anything big to latch onto, are here to spread their own memes, such as the Twoofer tinfoil-hat job way up there near the beginning.

    It’s disgusting, isn’t it?

  • Ros Go

I was glad to read you did not authorize the change in your photo.
The problem is some people find humor in doing hurtful things to others. The fact that they are trying to say it is a demeaning job to be shining shoes is disgusting. There are folks out there who have that job for a living and many wealthy people go to them to have that shine to their shoes. What would they do if someone was not humble enough to do the job for them? They would not know what to do to clean their own shoes!

Heck I think it does justice to Obama showing he will bend over to help anyone and not be prissy and think he is above it all…….. That is the message I get from whoever thought to change the photo.

On the other side we have a very dangerous person running for President who will change our country alright, but for the worse, and mindless people are so ignorant to vote for a man with a very dark background and even worse connections. I guess we just had it too good the last 7 1/2 years and people so quickly forget that they have to blame themselves when they go overboard with instant not affordable gratification.

I am truly appalled to see this has happened to you – it seems to have created an unwarranted and unwanted political debate which you and I have no part of unless in our own country – Australia.

I have known you through text and phone for many years and found you one of the more honest people of this world, a man of honour, integrity and family values. I trust everyone sees in your ORIGINAL photoes what I see.

Ted, Mel here, I grieve at the ignorance of some people that will not take the time to do a little research and just take the word of other uninformed individuals. Two of my neighbors, both of the younger adult generation are sporting Obama-Biden signs on their doors and one of them even stated to me that he wants socialized medicine. I wonder if he wants the higher taxes and the discontinuance of the tax break we have had via the Bush administration or the taking away of our hand guns and most importantly the few facets of the news media that tells the truth that will disappear with socialism under the Obama-Biden administration if the American people allow it to happen. I believe the next time I see this young man I will inform him that electricians such as he make very good money in Canada and there he will have his socialized medicine where if he ever contracts a life threatening ailment he doesn’t die while while waiting for his name to come up for treatment as has been the case of so many under the auspices of Governments supporting this type of medical care for their citizens.

  • rich r

Good stuff–the only one with less experience and more ignorant on America and the needs of the people is Mr. Obama himself–The Hollywood candidate fits in the picture well…sorry to my fellow Dems—our party has been destroyed and taken over by these liberal elitists that can only make believe they are the savior—so stop being so literal and gullible….

  • JoAnne

I’m glad you put this information on your site so people know you don’t subscribe to that kind of “humor.”

A friend sent me the altered image, and admitted he knew it was “wrong” but thought it was “funny anyway.”

It’s not funny and the people who want us to have a sense of humor about it are just ignorant of the pain such images cause.

I don’t condone sexist jokes about Palin, either. It’s easy enough to poke fun of her ignorance without referring to gender.

  • J. Austin

Ted, as you can see from the posts, the US is a deeply divided nation. Unfortunately many of those on the far right, like Tailgunner, are so blinded by their anger and hatred, that they don’t pay attention to what is going on nor do they listen to what the candidates are saying. People blindly following someone, especially an extremist, w/o thinking for themselves is what got us into our current economic and political mess. Another bank collapsed today and we are on the brink of an economic meltdown. Sadly, people still support the Bush/McCain/Palin type of corrupt special-interest supporting government that caused the mess we are in. Luckily their numbers are falling as people realize what a mess we are in and that losing their jobs/retirement/savings is a distinct possibility due to the corruption and greed at the top. BTW, I am an independent having voted nationally for candidates from both parties like Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. I did not vote for Clinton the first time but did the second time when I saw the good he was doing. People need to assess the candidate based on his/her qualifications and actions, not just based on what party they are affiliated. BTW, Palin is against a woman’s right to choose even in the case of rape or incest, is against stem cell research which holds the greatest promise in the fight against disease like cancer, and thinks it is perfectly ok to kill innocent animals (she shot wolves from a helicopter, and considers killing wolves and moose a sport). Certainly not the values I believe in so I won’t voter for her.

Ted, You said about the Presidential campaign.
I honestly do not know much about nor do I follow it.
What a dumb thing to admit about your right to vote.
Go live in another country try it, try to be as free with your lens as you care to be.
I agree with you on the plagiarism issues. But all people need to take a stance or side on the future of our country.
It’s what makes America great. Good Work I like your subject matter.

Ted: Joe, I do live in another country. What do you think AU in my domain name stands for?

  • Jimmy Z

Come on, grow up. It’s the most exposure your photo has ever seen.

  • Tailgunner

Cowards, outraged by the Obama picture and other political satire are quite content to spew their party line, and castigate a harmless woman who dared to enter the political arena. Isn’t it strange how it is open season on blacks and women who don’t go along with that cluster-suck of leftist fools?

I wonder what they are afraid of? Proclaiming that they are “Independent” is just a form of verbal foreplay to disguise and push their America hating agenda.

Sarah is infinitely more qualified than Hussein Obama to lead America. She’s worked in the private sector, in governement, and she is governor of the largest American state. She is active with the National Guard, and is their commander, as are all state governors in their respective states.

America hating Obama is an empty shirt and has no experience in anything; and he has not done anything productive in the U.S. Senate. He has ZERO experience. It’s no wonder the reprobates and cretins all hate Sarah Palin.

Since the leftist’s policy is not one of honor or truth, there will be more vicious and unfounded attacks against Sarah Palin because it is an election year, and the hallmark of the liberals is their politics of personal destruction, not truth. Believe it.

  • hey ted, this photo should have never been created. Let the past go and move on. It might be funny to some people but I don’t see no humor in it, seems to me that you are a racist. It also could be offending Sarah., did you ask Sarah if you could make this photo? I am not a black person, just a white middle-class person working in AMERICA.

Ted: David, please read my article again: I have not created the image with Obama and Palin.

  • Brad

ted this guy had a profile about him air on Sunrise a few months ago. Really nice guy that got caught up in tough circumstances.

  • Skeeter Davis

Why not publish the doctored photo. It’s funny. It’s sattire at it’s best. Look at Saturday Night Live. It’s one of the funniest, and most popular, shows on TV. If we all can find something to laugh at every day it may, if only for a brief moment, take our mind of the crisis we are all facing.

  • Bobby Reece

Obviously the photo was stolen from you and altered, anybody with any sense knows that Obama is not qualified for this type of job, much less President of the United States…Good Day..

  • really great capture.

  • John Milone

The American presidential elections are a complete farce!Anyone who honestly believes that there is a democratic choice in America, (at least at the national level), is either naive, ignorant, mentally challenged, or just plain brain dead.   911 was an inside job involving the CIA, Mossad, and other groups with similar economic, military, and political agendas.  Hence, the US government offers us “security” in trade for liberties and uses 911 as a pretext for wars in the Middle East and elsewhere to control oil supplies.   The international community knows this.Neither candidate, Osama bin Barama or McBush will effect any change in policy from what we have seen since their Bilderburg brother, Bill Clinton, and those before him.I believe JFK was an exception. As for the plagiarism, it’s regrettable and unfortunate.  I don’t condone plagiarism of any kind.

  • Jeff Austin

Thank you for quickly posting this letting people know you were not the originator of the altered photo. Most people with common sense would know it was altered and certainly not from such a gifted photographer as yourself … but sadly there are a lot of ignorant people in my country (USA).

This type of politics greatly saddens me but unfortunately it has become typical in our country. Each of our major parties, democratic and republican, have a large convention several months before the national election. Each party normally sees a large increase in interest and support for a couple of weeks after the convention and then things settle down to where they were before the convention. The same thing happened this year although the republican party enjoyed a greater increase than usual due to US Senator John McCain selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate. Being an attractive charismatic woman she drew a lot of attention and added new life to the republication party …. at least initially. She became an overnight celebrity ….. but then people began to find out more about her. The ongoing criminal investigation into her abuse of power as governor of Alaska, less than 2 years of government experience, the lack of any foreign experience, her radical right political beliefs about God’s will justifying an unjust war and future wars w/ people who don’t believe as she does, and extreme beliefs about denying a woman the right to choose. The more people find out, the less they are supporting her as seen by her 7 point drop in approval ratings this last week. The republican party is, of course, very upset by this drop in popularity 7 weeks from election day and is being ruthless in trying to block the investigation into her abuse of power as governor until after the election (further indicating she is guilty) and promoting photos like the one you mentioned that in many ways have a racist undertone.

I am not a democrat or a republican. I am an independent. And yes, I am supporting Barack Obama in the presidential campaign because I believe he will bring back integrity to our nation, implement the change we need, both internally and with our relationships w/ other nations.

Please pray that our nation does the right thing in November and elects Obama, a person dedicated to helping people and not McCain whose bad policies and support of lobbyists and special interests will lead our nation to economic collapse.

I guess we just had it too good the last 7 1/2 years and people so quickly forget that they have to blame themselves when they go overboard with instant not affordable gratification.
Believe me if the picture would be the other way around the vicious democratic left would laugh all day.
    Thank you for your time,
    Gertraud

Ted, Did you interview the shoe shine guy? How do we know he is homeless? Just want to make sure we are not stereotyping based on clothing and hair. He could easily be one of my freinds and we are quite well to do.

  • Julie

    Ted
I am truly appalled to see this has happened to you – it seems to have created an unwarranted and unwanted political debate which you and I have no part of unless in our own country – Australia.
I remember your original photo vividly and as someone pointed out, I believe the homeless man was actually a story on Sunrise.
I have known you through text and phone for many years and found you one of the more honest people of this world, a man of honour, integrity and family values. I trust everyone sees in your ORIGINAL photoes what I see.
Hope the family are all well and happy.
    Regards
    Julie 🙂

yeah but it was funny. They do the same to Palin and they have been very cruel to her.

  • Well perhaps some good will come out of this and your photographic work will have more exposure as a result.

Anyway, this is a fantastic picture !

  • Todd

The altered picture was silly – so I had to check out the site. The real picture, with the homeless man, is very powerful. Really nice work. Thanks.

Here in the USA politics is always like this…we are used to it.

    Ted
Sorry I and others have missed some points. Still going through your work for some inspiration and examples of subject matter. Didn’t realize you were down under.
I have a Point & Shoot S800 Fuji, just not the same as a real SLR. Can’t afford one now. Enough Politics Eh?
