Masked man

 on

There was a group of Asian men in the Pitt Street Mall. They looked as an organized tourist group. One of them drew my attention in particular for wearing the facemask. I have seen people wearing them in Japan against pollution but I did not think Sydney air is that bad to warrant one.

There are several reasons why Asian(Japan, China, …) people wear face mask.

One may wear a face mask when sick in order to prevent passing microbes or viruses to others. This is probably the number 1 reason for wearing a face mask as it is considered a polite gesture.
If one has allergies, this may also be a good reason to wear a face mask in order to prevent breathing in pollen and other allergens.

In reality, a very small portion of people wear a face mask with for reason air pollution.

    Cheers,
    Fred

Interesting photo and thought. I saw an asian man wearing a face mask on the bus yesterday. Our air here in Northern CA (USA) is pretty good, but not great, and I was surprised to see him wearing it on a good air quality day (though it is allergy season). Some people do wear them in the summer when we get weather systems coming thru that traps bad air (due to auto exhaust) but as a norm people don’t wear them. Interesting sign that people are taking note of the quality of the air we are being forced to breath. And as usual, your black and white conversion is top notch.
