Trees covered with lichen

On the way to Mount Ruapehu we came across a beautiful forest scenery. It a nice, bright day and the sunlight has highlighted the ever-present lichen on the trees. It gave the scene an ethereal atmosphere.

Unfortunately what made an amazing vista, also may mean death to this entire forest. Lichen keeps the trees continuously¬†coated in a slimy, wet environment that can lead to decay. ¬†I have to stress the word “may” here, as some plant expert are convinced this is a perfectly harmless situation. I’ll leave this discussion to the botanists to decide upon.
