Forgotten Songs at Angel Place

I took this photograph of empty cages hanging in the Angel Place almost two weeks ago. This art installation is part of the Laneway Art Program 2010.

Forgotten Song is a creation by artist Michael Thomas Hill, who enlisted help from Dr. Richard Major (Senior Research Scientist), Richard Wong (Environment Design) and Dave Towey (Programmer). The hanging cages are accompanied by sounds of 129 species of birds native to New South Wales and which are formally listed as extinct or threatened with extinction. These are the sounds of birds before Sydney area became a city – an irreplaceable habitat loss leading all these species to extinction.

Few days ago I posted a photograph of an armoured personnel carrier parked next to Australia Square. Today I found three of these “tanks” in a imposing set-up on a small Angel Place street.

These vintage military vehicles are part of installation art by artist Adam Norton, who sourced three ex-army vehicles from private collectors. Norton’s vision here is to show people of Sydney how much freedom they have and emphasise we are still the “lucky country”
