Here is an example of a long exposure, and lots of patience, photography. The method is pretty simple, keep exposing for as long as it is possible on your camera and hope the lightning occurs during the exposure.
Here is a photograph of a very common coastal bird:White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae). They are mostly light blue-grey in colour, and they have a characteristic white face. Usually they are very timid and fly away when approached.
